package (CSP), its small size allows easy use in portable devices.
In addition to the MAX3228E with its two transmitters and two receivers, the MAX3229E (available in the
same UCSP package) includes one transmitter and one receiver. Both include AutoShutdown™. Like the
MAX3388E in the data-cable example, the MAX3228E includes a V
L
pin that can be operated down to
1.65V for low-voltage logic systems.
Stay Compliant as Long as Possible
The MAX3228E and MAX3229E (available in CSP) can be powered over a wide range of supply
voltages (+2.5V to +5.5V). To remain compliant with the RS-232 specifications (assuming V
CC
is high
enough), the output-voltage swings for each device change from "compliant" to "compatible" when V
CC
falls below approximately +3.1V. Details are shown in Table 2. The reduced output levels also extend
battery life by reducing the supply current.
