5A Step-Down Regulator Has I²C-Programmable

Abstract:
Many portable
devices must vary the core voltage of the applications processor dynamically. This
design idea shows a simple and effective way to control the voltage output of a 5A step-down regulator,
using an I²C interface.
A similar version of this article appeared in the June 24, 2011 issue of Electronic Design magazine.
Many portable devices must vary the core voltage of the applications processor dynamically, to control the
voltage-output ramp and also to enable special power-saving modes of operation. The circuit of Figure 1
shows a simple but effective way to control the voltage output of a 5A step-down regulator, using an I²C
interface.
