Why Use Speed Control?
When a fan is selected for an application, it must be designed for worst-case conditions. This means
selecting a fan that can move enough air to keep the system sufficiently cool, even with worst-case
ambient temperature, power dissipation, fan production tolerances, and fan aging. The reality of the
situation is that the system will spend most of its time well under worst-case conditions. At this point, it
should be obvious that under most conditions, fan speed can be reduced without adverse effects on the
system and increased only when conditions demand it. Not so obvious is why bother then with fan speed
control?
